The
group of artists whose work is being show cased on this website is
primarily from the Huerfano Chapter in northwestern New Mexico.
’Huerfano’ in Navajo, Dzil na’ oodilii – means: “water gushing up from a rock”.
The Navajo people are a strong and proud people who are known
world-wide for their skills as fine jewelry makers, weavers, and
pottery makers. Navajo rugs, pots, and silver/turquoise jewelry can
sell for thousands of dollars a piece.
There are few business opportunities on the Reservation, and these
rural areas tend to be impoverished. The Navajo people are
highly creative and a large percentage of the adult population is
artists. These crafts-people go to neighboring cities to sell their
art to non-Navajo wholesalers at a fraction of what their art is
really worth.
We
hope that by selling directly to the public, and no middle-man, the
local Navajo artist will benefit. Please know that with each
purchase you make, you are helping support a local Navajo artist.
All
the money from your purchases go to the crafts person and to support
of this website.
Thank you for your support!
